NPQ for Leading Primary Mathematics (NPQLPM)

To support teachers familiar with mastery approaches to teach maths effectively in the classroom.

This course is for:

teachers and leaders with responsibility for leading maths across a primary key-stage or school, or those who want to have this responsibility
teachers familiar with mastery approaches to teaching primary maths, who want to improve leadership skills in this area
subject leaders in a school already engaged in the primary Teaching for Mastery programme or similar programme example

Teacher’s should have a secure level of understanding of approaches to mastery teaching for mathematics. This should come through a minimum of 1 year’s participation of the Maths Hubs Teaching for Mastery programme, or a programme equivalent.

This course will:

take 12 months to complete
involve an average of 1 to 2 hours of study each week
be a mix of self-study and group sessions
have a written assessment

The course includes:

independent study
group coaching
face-to-face sessions with other participants
a ‘maths conference’ per teaching cycle

You’ll need to spend 1 to 2 hours a week working on this NPQ. If you can, you should do this during work hours in career development time.

How much is the programme?

Funding for Autumn 2024 will target those teachers and leaders who work in the most challenging schools or educational settings, serving more disadvantaged communities. Scholarship funding to cover the full NPQ course cost will be available to teachers and leaders from: (i) the 50% of schools with the highest proportion of students who attract pupil premium funding; (ii) 16 to 19 educational settings identified as having high disadvantage.

Scholarships will continue to be available to all teachers and leaders from publicly funded schools and 16 to 19 educational organisations for the following NPQs: 

leading primary maths  
SENCO  
headship

Please note that The Avila Partnership will not be running this course in 2024/25. However, other providers are available.
